Health camp begins in Thrissur

THRISSUR, FEB. 3. As many as 1,470 patients were treated at a health camp-cum-exhibition, which began here on Tuesday.

The four-day camp, being conducted by the Union Health and Family Welfare Department, was inaugurated by A.C. Jose, MP. The district panchayat president, N.K. Subramanian, presided over the function. The deputy mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, and the Collector, V.M. Gopala Menon, were present on the occasion.

In all, 91 doctors examined patients in 36 cubicles set up at the Indoor Stadium. The speciality wing, which functioned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., included cells for general medicine, ENT, ophthalmology, gynaecology, infertility, immunisation, family welfare and dental care.

The super-speciality wing, which functioned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., included cells for neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, nephrology, gastro-entrology, maxillofacial surgery, urology and genito-urinary surgery, neonatology and oncology. Medicines worth Rs.60,000 were given free to the patients, the organisers said.

The exhibition, got up at the Corporation Stadium, featured 53 agencies and focussed on various aspects of health care and medicine. Among the hospitals that took part were the Regional Cancer Centre, Thrissur Medical College, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, West Fort High-Tech Hospital, Elite Mission Hospital, Thrissur Heart Hospital, Mother Hospital and the District TB Centre.

The other agencies featured include Indian Systems of Medicine, Pain and Palliative Care Society, District Blindness Eradication Society, Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, Oushadhi, Vaidyaratnam, Lakshmi Nature Cure and Yoga Centre, and the District Yoga Association.

A `tele-medicine' system, set up at the pavilion of the District Cooperative Hospital, was inaugurated by the District Superintendent of Police, G. Janardhanan Nair.
