Barrages to be built across Hagari

BELLARY, FEB. 3. Allum Veerabhadrappa, Minister for Water Resources (Krishna Basin), said on Monday that the State Government proposed to construct barrages across the Hagari in the district to store water for irrigation and drinking purposes.

He was speaking after laying foundation stone for two lift irrigation schemes at Yalpi-Kaggal and Chaganur villages in Bellary taluk.

The scheme to be implemented at Yalpi-Kaggal will help irrigate 2,689 hectares of land at Joladarashi, Chellagurki, Yalpi, Yalpi-Kaggal, Lingadenahalli, and Paramadevana Halli. It will use 90 cusecs of water from the Hagari.

The project has been estimated at Rs. 13 crore. The scheme to be implemented at Chaganur has been estimated at Rs. one crore with a capacity to irrigate 647.77 hectares of land.

These schemes are expected to be ready in 20 months.

Kolur Basavanagouda, MP, who presided over the function, said the two schemes would go a long way in helping farmers.

S.J. Channabasappa, Secretary, Water Resources Department, told farmers not to violate the cropping pattern.

Meenahalli Eeranna, Chairman of Lidkar, G. Inath Reddy, President of the taluk panchayt, Gonal Virupakshagouda, zilla panchayat member, D. Subramanya, Chief Engineer of the Tungabhadra Irrigation Zone at Munirabad, and V.P. Uddihal, Superintending Engineer, were present.
