Computer-generated documents at police stations

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 3. All documents at city police stations — complaints, petitions and First Information Reports — will be computer-generated from this month-end, the Police Commissioner, R.Nataraj, said today.

Inaugurating `Media Monitoring', a police information archival system of press reports, at the commissionerate this morning, he said the department would occupy a slot in the recently- launched community frequency modulation (FM) radio station.

The media monitoring system allowed officers to have online access to press reports related to the city police. It would help in taking decisions faster, as different viewpoints would be compared. The system would help the police to connect incidents and would be of immense help in investigation, he said.

M.K.Jha, Joint Commissioner of Police (Central), said the facility was part of efforts to bring in greater transparency and accountability. All complaints would be stored in a database and archived.

On the monitoring system, he said, initially only senior officials at the commissionerate would have access to it. Once necessary infrastructure — including a wireless in local loop network — was in place, other officers and inspectors at all police stations could have access.

S. Sreeram of Nathan's Media Group, system designer, said software was customised for the city police. All reports pertaining to the city police would be fed into the system. Retrieval of reports and television clippings would be possible.

One of the key benefits of this application was that issues of public concern would be brought to the notice of authorities immediately. Work on creating the online application began in June 2003 and Standard Chartered Bank sponsored the project, Mr. Sreeram said.
