By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 3. "Railway women give the Railways a `human face', undertaking welfare activities, which it is not able to implement, M. Ravindra, former Chairman, Railway Board, said.

He was speaking at the anniversary celebrations of the Southern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation (SRWWO) here recently.

Mr. Ravindra said, "The Railways is like the armed forces. We often work under adverse circumstances, away from families. Much of its success is based on the tremendous efforts by railway women in meeting the needs of families."

Sumitra Sunderarajan, organisation's secretary, presented a report on the activities conducted during the year.

Revathi Anand, president, said the organisation had grown from a single unit in Chennai to six units across the area under the Southern Railway.

Jeevodaya, home for the destitute, cancer and AIDS patients and RASA, institute for music and dance training, received Rs .25,000 from the SRWWO. Mr. Rajendran, railway employee and father of a cancer-affected child, received a financial assistance of Rs. 50,000.
