KOCHI, JAN. 3. Igniting young minds to the take up the challenges of the future is uppermost on the agenda of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here. The doors of this premier research institution were thrown open to children of all ages and the general public on its Foundation Day - February 3. The Institute undertakes this exercise annually. The Institute Director, Mohan Joseph Modayil, says: "If the visit would help ignite the passion in at least one or two students to take up research activities in marine sciences, our efforts would be justified. This is an attempt to invest in the future generations", he adds. "Seeing is believing and it will inspire them", he says. "The activities of research institutions should be transparent and the people should know what was going on in them. Hence the programme," Dr. Modayil says. Among the visitors to the Kochi unit of the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources was Kuldeep Attri of New Delhi, a Marine Biology student of the Cochin University of Science and Technology. This was his first visit to the Institute. Mr. Attri was highly impressed by the research facilities and scientific activities undertaken by the various departments at the Institute. Mr. Attri hopes to shape his career as a scientist in genetics or biotechnology. Though most of the school students who queued up at the Institute may not be as vocal as Mr. Attri, the experience may have left some indelible impressions on them.
