HYDERABAD, FEB. 3. The interim budget presented by the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, should bring cheer to city dwellers as it prioritised the implementation of drinking water projects. The Minister announced that the infrastructure fund would be made available for projects to alleviate water shortage for mega cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. When asked how the provision would help the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, its Managing Director, M.G. Gopal, said that details like rate of interest were not available. "We have secured bank loans at a competitive interest rate of 8.5 per cent. We prefer to repay the bank loan if the loan extended under the Infrastructure Fund carried lesser rate of interest," he said. The interim budget gave priority for implementation of accelerated drinking water projects for the mega cities where the supply of drinking water was far below the demand.
