Tourist facilitation centre commissioned at Kallar

NEDUMANGAD, FEB. 3. The Rs. 20-lakh modern tourist facilitation centre, being set up by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) at Kallar for catering to the needs of the tourists proceeding to Ponmudi hill resort, was commissioned by the Tourism Minister, K. V. Thomas, today.

The centre, built on 50 cents handed over by the Department of Tourism to the DTPC near the Kallar bridge, was thrown open to the tourists at a public function presided over by the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, G. Karthikeyan.

The facilitation centre, with international standards has been set up in a single-storied building constructed on the lines of the Kanakakunnu Palace, has a floor area of 500 sq ft. The terrace of the round building has been set up in such a way that the children can utilise it for recreational activities and for holding parties.

In addition to the resting area, a restaurant, toilets, changing rooms, shops to sell forest produce, STD and ISD booths and car parking area have been set up at the centre.

The restaurant, snacks bar and the shop to sell spices and forest produce and handicraft items have already been leased out to a private party by the DTPC.

As many as five toilets each have been set for gents and ladies atn the centre. Two changing rooms have been earmarked for men and women, as the bathing ghat is at a walk-able distance from the centre. The Meenmutty waterfalls is just two km from the centre. Nearly 50 cars can be parked on the centre premises at a time.

According to the DTPC secretary, G. Santhanmohan, the centre has been set up to cater to the needs of tourists who arrive at the bathing ghat at Kallar and visit the eco-tourism project while proceeding to and from the hill resort.
