Held for getting his wife killed

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 3. A 32-year-old man has been arrested by the North-East Delhi police along with his two accomplices for allegedly getting his wife killed in a bid to get all her property transferred in his name. The body of the woman was found at Seemapuri in North-East Delhi on January 28.

According to the police, the body, later identified as that of Mumtaz, wife of Mohammad Zafar, a resident of Jhuggi New Seemapuri, was found near Jain Mandir around 10 p.m. There were injuries on her head, inflicted with a blunt object, and her throat had been slit with a sharp-edged weapon. Seemapuri police registered a case of murder and took up investigations.

Initially, Zafar expressed ignorance about the incident. Following interrogation, however, he confessed to having hatched the conspiracy to kill his wife. Sajid and Shahnawaz, the other two accused, had agreed to help him and were allegedly the actual killers. At Zafar's instance, they were arrested. The weapons of offence - a hammer and a knife - blood-stained clothes, a mobile phone and Rs. 5,000 were recovered from them.

During interrogation, Zafar told the police that he did not have any source of income and was dependent on his wife's income. She was into flesh trade and had earned a lot of money. She had also bought plots of land at various places in Seemapuri.

Around the same time, Zafar developed illicit relationships with another woman, causingd a rift between him and Mumtaz. Zafar then hatched the conspiracy, along with Sajid and Shahnawaz. He hoped to get all the property registered in his name as he was the only nominee.

On the fateful day, Zafar remained at home while Sajid made a call to Mumtaz and asked her to meet him at a shop at Dilshad Garden in Seemapuri around 9-45 p.m. Mumtaz met him and they began walking towards Jain Mandir. Shahnawaz too joined them. When they reached Jain Mandir, Shahnawaz suddenly attacked Mumtaz with a hammer. As she collapsed, Sajid slit her throat with a knife and fled. Further investigations in the case are on.
