Sunny day ahead

NEW DELHI FEB. 3. A sunny day is in store for the Capital though the weatherman has forecast mist in the morning. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around seven degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Tuesday were 20.2 and 6.3 degrees Celsius respectively, while at Palam it was 19.6 and 4.2 degrees Celsius.

Safdarjung recorded a maximum humidity of 88 per cent and a minimum of 28 per cent. At Palam, the maximum and minimum humidity were recorded at 97 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

Car-jacking reported

NEW DELHI FEB. 3 . A carjacking incident and another of robbery have been reported from Central Delhi since Monday night.

At Paharganj, a 24-year-old man was robbed of the Toyota Qualis he was driving by three car-borne young men on Rani Jhansi Road past midnight.

The police said Ram Vilas Singh, driving the Toyota Qualis belonging to Madan Mohan, a Gurgaon resident, and attached to a call centre, was returning after dropping the employees at Rohini in North-West Delhi. He was on his way to Gurgaon when the incident occurred around 1 a.m.

Three men, who were travelling in a Maruti 800 car overtook the Qualis and intercepted it near Ambedkar Bhawan on Rani Jhansi Road. One of them whipped out a country-made revolver and forced Ram Vilas to come out of the car. The robber then got into the Toyota Qualis and sped away. Ram Vilas later informed the police. It is suspected that the robbers were trailing the vehicle and intercepted it at an opportune moment. Meanwhile, a case of robbery has been registered at Paharganj police station and further investigations are on.

In another incident, a grocer's family was robbed of cash and jewellery by two young men at Model Basti in Central Delhi.

According to the police, Anil Kumar Goyal (48), a resident of Model Basti, was at his grocery shop when two armed young men barged into it and downed the shutters of the shop around 8 a.m. At the time, Anil was present in the shop along with his servant. The robbers then tied up the mouths of their victims and forced Anil to part with Rs. 10,000 and a gold chain. They then opened the shutters and fled from the spot.

Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police have registered a case of robbery and are investigating further.

Held with drugs

NEW DELHI FEB. 3. Three persons, who allegedly sold drugs through licensed outlets of "bhang'' at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The Bureau recovered 900 gm hashish and 120 gm opium from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that hashish and opium were being sold from some licensed retail outlets of "bhang" in Meerut, the NCB sleuths mounted surveillance around the outlets in question. Investigations revealed that one Ruchit used to deliver some packets containing hashish and opium.

The NCB managed to get the samples of the content of the packets and on chemical-test found that they were hashish and opium. On January 30, when Ruchit delivered a packet to Suraj, a salesman of the licensed retail outlet at Budana Gata, the NCB sleuths arrested him. They recovered 900 gm hashish and 120 gm opium from that packet. Ruchit and Suraj were arrested subsequently.

During interrogation, Ruchit disclosed that he worked as a carrier of drugs. He supplied the consignments to three licensed retail outlets of "bhang" in Meerut. He further disclosed that the consignments were supplied by one Pramod Jaiswal, the brother of Vinod, a local politician. The NCB raided his residence and arrested Pramod, despite resistance from local politicians and supporters of Vinod. Further investigations are on.
