Deadline for providing school uniforms

BANGALORE, FEB. 3. Children studying in schools run by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will get uniforms by February 15, according to the BMP Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy, here on Tuesday.

He was replying to members in the BMP Council who complained that the schoolchildren had not been given uniforms. "There is only a month for the annual examinations and our students are yet to get uniforms. You promised in December to distribute uniforms within a month but have failed to keep the promise," members from all parties said.

The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, criticised the officials of the BMP's Education Department and asked why the distribution of uniforms was delayed.

The Deputy Director (Education), M. Shantaraju, replied that the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC), which was given the order for supplying uniforms, had given them to 28 schools. "The uniforms will be distributed in the presence of the local corporators," he said.

However, the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education, Yasmeen Taj, said she was not aware of uniforms having been supplied to the schools.

Mr. Sreenivasa Murthy intervened and said the distribution of uniforms was delayed this year as the "education committee" had taken a long time to decide on giving the contract to the KHDC. "The uniforms were given on time last year, and we will ensure that they are given by August 15 next year. I admit there is a delay this year, and promise it will not be repeated," he said. The KHDC would be asked to supply uniforms to all schools by February 15. If the KHDC failed to do so, it would not be paid for the uniforms that it supplied after the deadline, he added.
