Letters to the Editor
Sir, We hope the beaming faces of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Kalyan Singh (Feb. 4) are not at the expense of the people who have time and again been made a laughing stock by politicians.
T.S. Padmanabhan,
* * * Sir, This refers to Ram Jethmalani's appeal to the President not to dissolve Parliament before it completes its full term. A premature election is unwarranted. The public in India should rise to the occasion and send appeals to the President not to dissolve Parliament to serve the interests of those in power.
B. Satyanarayanan,
* * * Sir, The suggestion that voting be made compulsory is amusing. Suppose I want to keep a party out of power, and I voted for its opponent, is there a guarantee that the two will not come together after the polls? As long as pre-poll alliances and post-poll alliances are the unrestricted domain of politicians, the voter has no say in governance. If government formation is not by the will of the voter but by the whim of the politician, a voter is at liberty not to make a fool of himself.
S. Ananthan,
