Letters to the Editor
Sir, The tragedy at Mina that claimed 250 lives was unfortunate. In any place where pilgrims congregate in large numbers, there is a tendency among them to jostle. At times, this causes stampedes, despite repeated warnings and appeals by organisers. In Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, the mahamaham is slated for March and lakhs of pilgrims are expected to congregate. Based on the experience of the last mahamaham (12 years ago), when a stampede claimed 50 lives, the authorities should ensure that foolproof crowd management is implemented.
