RAPS-I to function again
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
FEB. 4.
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has cleared the restarting of unit-I of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station-1 (RAPS-1) at Rawatbhata after a 21-month closure. The 30-year-old RAPS-1 is India's first pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) that has contributed more to scientific and engineering expertise than electrical power. The unit was shut down in April 2002 for an extensive safety review. During the closure, the unit's systems, structures and components were assessed for fitness for further operations. Certain major equipment like heavy water heat exchangers were replaced. A number of safety upgrading was also carried out, including incorporation of high-pressure emergency core cooling system.
