Women vow to fight against online lottery

BIDAR, FEB. 4. Over 5,000 members of Stree Shakti self-help groups vowed to fight against online lottery and the sale of liquor, in Bhalki on Tuesday.

The women, who assembled here for a taluk-level conference of self-help groups, decided to agitate against social evils.

They took a pledge to create awareness among themselves about women's rights and the need for political empowerment.

Earlier, they staged a play portraying the related evils of drinking, gambling, and crime.

Prakash Khandre, MLA, said women's self-help groups had been successful in stopping the sale and consumption of alcohol in villages in various parts of the country.

Shrikant Kulkarni, Community Development Programme officer, said self-help groups in the taluk had saved over Rs. 1.38 crore a year, which was a record.

He called upon them to diversify their activities and start income generation activities.
