BIJAPUR,
FEB. 3.
At a press conference, the in-charge Superintendent of Police, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, said the two rang up Balasahab Maitan on Tuesday and demanded Rs. 2 lakh from him. They told him to keep the bag containing the cash at a place near the railway station by the evening, failing which they would murder him. They also warned the doctor of dire consequences if he informed the police. However, the doctor approached the police.
He said the doctor's phone was tapped, but it did not help as the two changed telephone booths each time they made a call. Suspecting a police trap, the accused rang up the doctor and asked him not to deliver the money. The two told him that they would ring up again on Wednesday to inform him when and where to deliver the money. On Wednesday, they told the doctor to keep the bag under a tamarind tree near the Jod Gumbaz structure within an hour.
The doctor promptly informed the police who deployed plainclothesmen. He kept the bag there and returned.
Soon the duo emerged and tried to take the bag, but they were surrounded by the police.
