Poll panel promises to meet EVMs requirement
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD,
FEB. 4.
The Election Commission (EC) has reassessed the additional requirement of electronic voting machines (EVM) by Andhra Pradesh at 46,000 and "agreed" to supply them to the State by mid-March.
M. Narayana Rao, Chief Electoral Officer, now in Delhi, told The Hindu that the State's extra requirement was revised from 70,000 to 46,000 as it was felt that a 15 per cent standby EVMs was adequate.
The EC assessed the State's preparedness and expressed satisfaction. It would convene a meeting with Chief Secretaries and Directors-General of Police of States shortly to discuss law and order aspects of conducting the polls.
