GUNTUR, FEB. 4. Eight Dalits were injured, two of them seriously, when about 50 persons of Mandadam village belonging to upper castes clashed with Dalits of Krishnaipalem near Mangalagiri over a minor issue on Wednesday. The law and order situation in Mangalagiri turned tense this afternoon following the clash and the Dalits organised a `rasta roko' on the National Highway for some time demanding action against those who had attacked them. Trouble started in an RTC bus a couple of days ago when a Dalit student of Krishnaipalem travelling from Mangalagiri to Vijayawada refused to take Rs.3 from the conductor in 25 paise denomination. Ten upper caste persons belonging to Mandadam allegedly abused the Dalit student for refusing to take 25 paise coins. The student went to his village and complained to the elders, who searched for the upper caste persons in Mandadam and questioned their behaviour with the student. Later, about 50 supporters of the Mandadam group proceeded on motorcycles to Krishnaipalem where both groups threw stones at each other resulting in injuries. The injured Dalits were shifted to the Mangalagiri Government Hospital for treatment.
