CPI will finalise candidates on Sunday

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, FEB. 4. The Communist Party of India (CPI) high command will announce its candidates for the Coimbatore and Tenkasi (reserve) Lok Sabha constituencies after the State unit finalises the names at its executive committee meeting scheduled to be held in Chennai on February 8.

Disclosing this to reporters here today, the State secretary, R. Nallakannu, said, "We have formed the Democratic People's Alliance only to defeat the coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Kanchi Sankaracharya, which will hamper the all-round development of the State."

Recalling the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's assertion during the previous Assembly session that her party would strive for a non-Congress, non-BJP Government at the Centre, Mr. Nallakannu said she was forced to backtrack, thanks to the formation of the "formidable DPA". The State Government decided to dissolve district cooperative banks in Thanjavur, Sivaganga and Nilgiris and to liquefy them in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Dharmapuri districts, citing increasing non-performing assets.

Meanwhile, party sources here hinted that M. Appadurai, former MLA of Ottapidaram in Tuticorin district, might be fielded in the Tenkasi reserve constituency.
