Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, FEB. 4. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has opposed the decision of the Supreme Court banning employees from striking work, and has decided to mobilise public opinion against the order. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the end of the one-day district-level CITU workers' conference here on Wednesday. Earlier, the President of the CITU, M.K. Pandhe, who inaugurated the conference, said people were supreme in a democracy and no institution could be above them. Workers resorted to strike only when their rights were curtailed or to fight against injustice meted out by exploitative managements. It was "<149>undemocratic"<149> to snatch away their right to strike, he said. Referring to the sops announced by the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, he said they were illusory. Though the National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre was quick in announcing sops, it had not come out with details about revenue generation to fulfil its promises, he added.
