Survey to help provide facilities to 237 towns

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, FEB. 4. The Department of Urban Development and Town Planning has taken up a survey of 237 towns under the Geographical Information System (GIS).

The Minister for Urban Development, D.K. Shivakumar, told presspersons here today that the survey would help provide better civic amenities in new layouts. Besides identifying the needs of the residents, the survey would help detect illegal constructions and unauthorised water connections. The Centre, the Asian Development Bank, and other financial institutions would assist in conducting the survey, he added.

He said as per the new rules and regulations, town municipalities should provide roads that were 30 ft. wide and retain 10 per cent of the area in the new layouts as open space. He said an official of the Srinivaspur municipality had been suspended for allegedly violating regulations.

UNI reports:

The Minister said work on providing drinking water from the Cauvery river to areas under seven city municipal councils and one town municipal council near Bangalore would be taken up shortly at a cost of Rs. 655 crore.

Awards: Mr. Shivakumar said that to ensure proper designing and construction of commercial and residential houses in the State, the Government had decided to provide annual awards to architects and builders.

There would be six categories of awards — two for architects and four for builders. Each of them would carry a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation. The idea was to encourage quality buildings that would enhance the image of the State, he added.

While "Global Bangalore" and "Global Karnataka" awards would be presented to outstanding architects for their designs, awards would be provided to builders for best layouts/extensions, commercial buildings, and houses including apartments. A nine-member official committee headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (Development) would select the winners, the Minister added.
