By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 4. Five Government employees were arrested by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in different parts of the State in the last two days on charges of collecting bribes. The Karimnagar Drug Inspector, A. Sambaiah Naik, was caught red-handed by ACB officials when he allegedly accepted Rs. 20,000 bribe from a complainant. He tested positive during a chemical test, according to a press release. He was arrested and would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Hyderabad.

Sources said that the ACB had booked a case against Sambaiah a year ago while he was working at Warangal on charges of possessing assets worth more than one crore rupees which were disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was suspended following registration of the case. However, Sambaiah moved the High Court and obtained stay orders against his suspension. Later, he was reinstated and posted to Karimnagar, it is said.

The Mandal Revenue Office Surveyor of Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam district, B. Ramakrishna, was arrested at the Udipi hotel opposite Narsipatnam Sub-Collector office today on charge of accepting Rs. 2,000 bribe from a complainant. The tainted amount was recovered from him. He would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Visakhapatnam. He allegedly demanded bribe to enquire and process the `title of patta produce' applied by the complainant's wife.

The Vizianagaram Mandal Revenue Inspector, G. Rajasekhar, was apprehended on Wednesday at his office on the charge of receiving Rs. 500 bribe from a complainant to inquire and process the Legal Heir certificate applied by the latter's mother-in-law. He tested positive during a chemical test. He would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Visakhapatnam.

In another case, the Work Inspector of the AP State Housing Corporation Limited, K. Venkata Rao, working at Veldurthi mandal in Guntur district, was arrested on Tuesday night at his rented house in Macherla on charges of receiving Rs. 1,500 from a complainant. He would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Vijayawada. The complainant was a beneficiary under Indira Awaas Yojana . Venkata Rao's friend, Ramesh Babu, an engineering student, received the bribe amount on the former's instructions. Ramesh Babu tested positive during a chemical test.

The Junior Inspector of Co-operative Societies, Ch. Sudhakar, working at Sangareddy in Medak district, was arrested today on charges of receiving Rs. 500 bribe from a complainant. He would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Hyderabad. The complainant was resident of China Ghanpur of Kulcheram mandal and applied for a loan from B.C. Corporation to set up a barbershop. The Mandal Development Officer sanctioned the loan. But, the Junior Inspector demanded bribe to process the cheque relating to loan and was caught.

A surprise check by the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Wednesday revealed alleged collection of bribe by the Deputy Executive Engineer of Irrigation department, V. Rajaiah, working at Ramayampet sub-division in Medak district.

A former president of Ambajipet village Water Users' Association in Shankarampet mandal, S. Satyanarayana, completed works worth Rs. 58,000 during his tenure under the Minimum Rehabilitation Project, a press release said. However, he had not received the amount. As his term was completed in November 2002, the Government delegated the check issuing power to the DEE.

The ACB officials charged that the DEE took advantage of the situation and demanded bribe from Satyanarayana to withdraw Rs. 58,000 as the check issuing power rested with him. On Wednesday, the DEE withdrew the amount from the Agricultural Branch of the SBH at Medak and took Rs. 10,000 as his share. On a tip-off, ACB officials conducted a surprise check and found the unaccounted cash of Rs. 10,000 in the DEE's possession. Further investigation is on.
