MANGALORE, FEB. 4. The Derebail Citizens' Committee has complained that a prominent township is releasing sewage into storm-water drains from uphill areas. The committee headed by the corporator of Derebail, Purandar, accused the township developer of releasing sewage into open drains, which, according to the committee, had contaminated drinking water in open wells. Mr. Purandar told a press conference here today that over 200 wells in the area had been polluted downstream of Derebail village, which had deprived the villagers of drinking water. He said the township had two giant tanks in which sewage was collected. Around 2 a.m., the people managing the tanks released the sewage into open drains, filling the area with unbearable stench. In order to prevent water from flowing downstream, the villagers had blocked the drain, and this had been challenged by the developer, he said. As the water in the wells had been contaminated, villagers were forced to travel uphill and fetch drinking water or opt for water supplied by the corporation, which "did not come cheap", he said.
