Nod for KSRTC bus terminal

By S. Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 4. The Government has given the nod to acquire five acres of land on the side of Kazhakkoottom-Kovalam NH 47 Bypass near Enchakkal for constructing a modern bus terminal for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRCT) and to shift the super class and long-distance services from the Central Bus Station at Thampanoor.

The Government has asked the District Collector to acquire the five acres identified for the bus terminal project a couple of years ago within a month so that the construction activities can commence immediately, the Managing Director of the KSRTC, C. Appukuttan Nair, told The Hindu .

The funds being used for the World Bank-aided capital region development project will be utilised for acquiring the land and constructing the modern terminal as the cash-strapped corporation does not have funds for the project.

The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) has been entrusted with the responsibility of constructing the bus terminal for the KSRTC, Mr. Nair said. As per the proposal, all the super class services being operated using deluxe and Volvo buses and other long-distance buses of the corporation would operate from the proposed terminal at Enchakkal.

The short-distance services to Nedumangad and Kattakada side and inter-State buses to Nagercoil will continue to ply from Thampanoor. The KSRTC will operate link services from Enchakkal to Thampanoor for the benefit of the commuters.

The construction of the proposed new terminal is being taken up to reduce the congestion in the city by diverting long-distance buses through the Kazhakkoottom-Kovalam NH Bypass to Enchakkal. The Corporation authorities believe that the present congestion being faced at Thampanoor can also be reduced to an extent.

The operating centre for the city buses and the waiting shed at East Fort will have to be wound up for taking up the next phase of the Fort beautification project.

The Managing Director said the city buses would be operated from Vikas Bhavan, Peroorkada, Pappanamcode and Vizhinjam depots.
