BANGALORE, FEB. 4. L. Devadas has waited for over 10 years to demonstrate his devices, which he claims can attract and kill hordes of mosquitoes. Other inventions of his will kill mosquito larvae in places where they breed and others can be used for keeping tanks and lakes free of weeds so that the insects cannot breed, he says. The Chief Health Officer of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has tentatively agreed to allow a demonstration of devices invented by Mr. Devadas. Different locations are to be identified for the demonstration by February 10 by the civic body's health officers. "The devices are either electric or electromagnetic. They can trap and destroy up to one kg. of mosquitoes overnight, if they are kept working from dusk to dawn," Mr. Devadas said. No chemicals were used and some devices had been specially designed for open drains. Some of them were large enough to be stationed on lakes and tanks. He was prepared to fabricate them in larger numbers at his industrial unit, he said. However, the inventor's proposal might run into rough weather on the question of bearing the cost of the demonstration, which he claimed would be Rs. 20 lakh. The demonstrations will be spread over 30 days and need the use of vehicles and workers. "This is to cover at least 20 locations in different wards at locations identified by the BMP," he said. The BMP Special Commissioner, Subash Chandra, has said a survey of locations was being undertaken.
