BANGALORE, FEB. 4. The Bangalore Mananagara Palike (BMP) Council today decided to prepare a project report for three new flyovers and awarded work of construction of a subway with shops at Brigade Road-Mahatma Gandhi Road junction and improvement of Byrasandra Tank. Although the announcements made at the Council meeting were drowned in the slogan shouting by the Opposition parties, the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, said a series of projects were approved in the meeting. Mr. Ramesh told presspersons after the meeting that the Council had awarded the work of construction of a subway at Brigade Road-Mahatma Gandhi Road junction to Shimet Infrastructure Ltd. The Rs. 3.02-crore subway would have 28 shops. It was awarded on build, operate, and transfer (BOT) basis, Mr. Ramesh said. The Council awarded the contract to improve Byrasandra Tank at a cost of Rs. 1.31 crore to B.G. Channappa, a contractor. The three flyovers would come up at Minerva Circle (at a cost of Rs. 14.41 crore), Mysore Road-Chord Road junction (Rs. 6.9 crore) and Yeshwanthpur Circle (Rs. 25.9 crore). The Council cleared the work on construction of nine bus bays on Mysore Road and the work would begin soon. He said the proposal to prepare a detailed project report to improve the central areas, particularly around the K.R. Market, was approved at the meeting. The other proposals for preparation of project reports were widening of the road in front of Vidhana Soudha and the road from Mehkri Circle to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium. Earlier, when the Leader of the House, H. Jayaram read out the proposals, the Opposition trooped to the well of House and raised slogans. The Opposition members continued their protest against the alleged "kickback-deal" to award a road contract to a blacklisted company. The Opposition said the Council had decided to blacklist the company but the Mayor denied it. He said the Opposition was envious that he was giving a push to development work. The Mayor suspended over 20 councillors for ignoring his orders to resume their seat. But the security personnel could not execute his orders to evict the defiant councillors. The helpless Mayor had the proposals read amidst the din, announced that the subjects read out had been approved by the Council, and adjourned the House.
