GUWAHATI, FEB. 5. The Students' Federation of India is set to update its programme and constitution at a four-day national conference beginning here on February 7. At a press conference here today, the general secretary, Kallol Roy, said the updated programme and constitution would be adopted after a threadbare discussion and deliberation by delegates from all over the country. "The conference would also issue an appeal to the country's student community to overthrow the BJP-led NDA Government to save the country from the danger of saffronisation and other forms of attack on education," Mr. Roy said. "The entire organisation will focus its attention on the burning problems of the region like deprivation of the region for decades by successive governments at the Centre, irrespective of the Congress or the BJP. The conference would also deliberate on the twin issues of militancy and unemployment.'' A public rally in Guwahati on February 7 will be addressed by the Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, the former SFI president and CPI (M) politburo member, Sitaram Yechury, the SFI president, K.K. Ragesh, and the Assam unit secretary of the CPI (M), Hemen Das, apart from Mr. Roy himself. Prabhat Patnaik of Jawaharlal Nehru University will be the main speaker at a seminar on "Globalisation, society and education" on February 8. The West Bengal Education Minister, Kanti Biswas, will address a seminar on "Challenges to education" on February 10.
