Direct election of civic chiefs mooted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 5. The Government is contemplating amendments to the Kerala Panchayat Act and Kerala Municipalities Act to facilitate direct election of panchayat presidents and municipal chairmen.

Replying to a submission by V.J. Poulose (Congress) in the Assembly today, the Local Self-Government Minister, Cherkalam Abdulla, said the proposal was mooted in view of the rampant floor-crossing in panchayats and municipalities.

Industrial units: Replying to a submission by A.K. Balan (CPI-M), the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, said the Government proposed to make use of the Rehabilitation Fund suggested in the 2004-'05 budget to provide assistance to workers of factories that get closed down for various reasons.
