THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 5. The Government is contemplating amendments to the Kerala Panchayat Act and Kerala Municipalities Act to facilitate direct election of panchayat presidents and municipal chairmen. Replying to a submission by V.J. Poulose (Congress) in the Assembly today, the Local Self-Government Minister, Cherkalam Abdulla, said the proposal was mooted in view of the rampant floor-crossing in panchayats and municipalities. Industrial units: Replying to a submission by A.K. Balan (CPI-M), the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, said the Government proposed to make use of the Rehabilitation Fund suggested in the 2004-'05 budget to provide assistance to workers of factories that get closed down for various reasons.
