THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 5. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, has said that the Government will clamp down on persons who try to destroy public property. Opposing an adjournment motion sought to be moved by M.V. Jayarajan (CPI-M) in the Assembly today on the police lathicharge on SFI students yesterday, the Chief Minister said cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the law on destruction of public property had been taken for setting afire a Government car by SFI activists in connection with the student violence on Wednesday. The Government would not allow anyone to obstruct mediapersons in the discharge of their duties, Mr. Antony said. He said Wednesday's student violence was a sequel to clashes between two sections of students over an eve-teasing incident. It had begun with a clash between SFI and ABVP activists at the Medical College Hospital. The police had arrested 32 persons in connection with the incident and taken them to the Armed Reserve Camp. On hearing about this, some SFI-CPI(M) activists reached the camp and forcibly opened the gates allowing the detained students to escape. The police rounded up six of them, but had to face the wrath of the SFI-DYFI-CPI(M) elements, he said. Holding up photographs of police personnel being roughed up by the students, Mr. Antony wondered whether it was proper for the CPI(M) to take things so far. Nobody should think that they could make the police force ineffective by resorting to violence against them, he said.
