KOCHI, FEB. 5. A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today directed the State Pollution Control Board (PCB) to ensure that the incinerators and biomedical treatment facilities set up in the state were functioning properly. The Bench comprising the Acting Chief Justice, N. K. Sodhi, and Justice K.K. Dinesan also directed the PCB to take effective steps to ensure that biomedical waste were handled by the medical institutions without causing any adverse effect to the human health and environment. If any organisation or individual felt that the functioning of the incinerators or treatment plant was not up to the mark, it would be open to them to bring the issue to the notice of the PCB. The directives were issued while disposing of writ petitions filed by the Kochi-based Institute of Social Welfare and others. CPI(M) men acquitted
A Division Bench comprising Justice K.A. Abdul Gafoor and Justice J. M. James acquitted five CPI(M) activists convicted by the Thalassery Sessions Court in a case relating to the murder of a BJP worker, Kunhiraman. The Bench, however, confirmed the life imprisonment awarded to five other CPI(M) activists. The prosecution case had attributed the motive for the murder to political enmity. Directive to Corporation
The Bench has directed the State Government and the Kochi Corporation to inform he court about the steps they proposed to take for remove and disposal of municipal wastes in the Kochi Corporation Area. The court imposed a cost of Rs. 1, 000 on the Corporation official who was responsible for not filing a status report on the progress of the widening work of the Mullassery canal as directed by the court earlier.
