ALLUR, (NELLORE DT.), FEB. 5. The Information Minister, S. Chandramohan Reddy, claimed that the women's thrift movement in the State had been attracting worldwide attention, with a number of foreign dignitaries evincing interest in the scheme. Addressing a public meeting on Thursday at Allur, 35 km from Nellore, in connection with distribution of assets worth Rs. 1.80 crores to nearly 500 beneficiaries, the Minister made a detailed mention about the spread of small savings and the contribution by women's groups through DWCRA and pointed out that Andhra Pradesh was the only State where the thrift groups were getting a matching contribution of Rs. 500 crores, whereas all the other States in the country were not contributing that much in their areas. Referring to requests for more ration cards and sanction of cycles to eligible beneficiaries, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy said that more than 99 lakh people have been provided with ration cards and more people are being accommodated. On the distribution of cycles, he disclosed that the delay in distributing cycles to students was mainly because of delay on the part of manufacturers, as they were not able to cope with huge orders. The Joint Collector, N. Sridhar, Project Director of `Velugu,' Vijayakumar, and ZPTC/MPTC members belonging to the TDP and Congress spoke. The Allur mandal president, Arunayya, presided. The Minister also addressed a similar meeting and distributed assets at Kavali.
