JD(U) demands apology from Sonia

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 5. The Janata Dal (United) today sought a "public apology'' from the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, for "not allowing" its president and Defence Minister, George Fernandes, to speak in Parliament for over two years.

A clean chit was given to Mr. Fernandes yesterday by the Justice Phukan Commission in the Tehelka scandal.

The JD(U) spokesman, Shiv Kumar, reacting to Ms. Gandhi's description of the Phukan Commission as a "ghotala commission,'' said, "If that were the case then the Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, should be asked to step down as he has appointed Justice Phukan as the Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission.''
