PONDICHERRY, FEB. 5. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today said the government had fulfilled all the assurances given in the Assembly in the last budget session and there was hardly any scheme which has not been implemented in the Union Territory. Mr. Rangasamy appealed to the beneficiaries of various schemes to utilise the schemes fully. Launching the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Free Housing Scheme of the Pondicherry Slum Clearance Board at a function here, Mr. Rangasamy said this scheme was aimed at replacing all the 50,000 huts in the Union Territory with concrete structures. Handed over Rs. 15,000 to the beneficiaries, the Chief Minister said this was the first instalment of Rs. 40,000 subsidy earmarked for each family living in huts to construct concrete structures. To start with Rs. 30 crores would be spent this year and 7,500 families would be covered for payment of the subsidy. The six-year programme to replace all the huts would involve Rs. 180 crores.
New policy launched
Mr. Rangasamy launched the Jana Sri Bhima Yojana of the Life Insurance Corporation of India for the below poverty line families. The Revenue Department here was operating the scheme in collaboration with the LIC. The Chief Minister handed over a cheque of Rs 1.64 crores towards premium to R. Thamodharan LIC Senior Divisional Manager, Vellore. The insurance scheme, for which the government was paying a premium of Rs. 100 per head, would cover 95,000 families (having in all 2.5 lakh persons) and beneficiaries were in the age group of 18-59. The scheme envisaged payment of Rs. 20,000 to the family of the beneficiary if he died a natural death and Rs. 50,000 if the insurer died in an accident. The scheme also envisaged payment of relief to persons suffering with disabilities. Mr. Rangasamy said the Revenue Department also launched a group insurance to cover women also. A total of 55,000 women belonging to families living below the poverty line were being covered. R. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Housing Board, presided. The Agriculture Minister, A Namassivayam, the Chief Secretary, R. Padmanabhan, and the Housing Secretary, R. M. Pillai, were among those who spoke.
