Hospital superintendent suspended

Rajahmundry: The superintendent of the Government Headquarters Hospital here, Ramesh, has been suspended. The suspension orders were served on Dr. Ramesh on Thursday. According to hospital sources, the suspension orders were issued to facilitate proper police enquiry into the theft of money from the hospital on the night of December 3. It may be recalled that Rs.17 lakhs meant for disbursement of salaries to hospital staff was missing from the hospital on December 4. Dr. Ramesh was on leave on December 3 and 4, and, according hospital sources, handed over the second key with him to the clerk to facilitate disbursement of salaries. On December 3, the clerk concerned brought the money by 2 pm and disbursed part of the amount and kept the remaining amount of Rs.17 lakhs in the locker. The police registered a case. Two employees of the hospital -- the cashier and the clerk concerned -- had already been placed under suspension.

Twenty students taken ill

GUNTUR: Twenty students of Reddipalem in Bollapalli mandal were taken ill on Thursday after they consumed fried snacks close to their school and were being treated in a private hospital in Karampudi.

The students of R.C.M. School in Reddipalem consumed the snacks on Wednesday evening and developed nausea this morning. All of them were reportedly out of danger, but were being given fluids in the hospital.

Congress in celebratory mode

Hyderabad: Congress circles here celebrated the quashing of bribery charges in the Bofors case against Rajiv Gandhi and accused political parties of tarnishing the image of Rajiv Gandhi without any evidence all these days.

Talking to presspersons on Thursday, the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, welcomed the judgment and said the tainted rival parties should learn a lesson from it and abstain from throwing mud on Congress leaders.

Recalling the allegations against TDP-BJP leaders, Mr.Srinivas said the Congress leaders shined by contrast. Meanwhile, the City Congress Committee took out a rally to celebrate the court ruling and distributed sweets.

Open university exam schedule

HYDERABAD: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) has announced that the B.A., B.Com and B.Sc,examinations would be held from April 27 to 30 (1st year), May 15 to 20 (2nd year) and May 5 to 10 for the third year. A single examination form may be used for all the examinations and the last date for submission of applications is March 20, a press release said.

The university has also announced the results of the second year supplementary examinations for B.A./B.Com/B.Sc students, which were conducted in December 2003. The study centre-wise results were being despatched and the memorandum of marks will be sent to students individually soon, a press release said, adding that the results were also available at the website: 222.braou.ac.in.

`Naxals' explode bomb in Rayachoti

Cuddapah: Suspected naxalites exploded a bomb on the road near Sahitya theatre in Dafedar Colony in Rayachoti town around Wednesday midnight, on the eve of People's War bandh, leading to tension in the area. The Rayachoti urban circle inspector, Naganna, and staff inspected the place of the bomb blast and intensified patrolling.

Meanwhile, the MPTC member of Sibyala in Rayachoti mandal, K. Narayana Reddy, announced his resignation from the post, allegedly due to naxalite threats. He sent a letter to the Rayachoti mandal development officer, citing personal reasons for his resignation.

Farmer commits suicide

ADILABAD: A farmer of Deepaiguda village in Jainadh mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide in a private lodge in Adilabad district headquarters last night.

According to the police, the farmer, identified as Loka Pramod Reddy, checked into Dhanlaxmi lodge in Adilabad town. Shortly after, he reportedly consumed pesticide. The boy, who came to clean the room, felt foul smell emanating from inside. He pushed the door and found the man lying on the bed. The boy alerted the hotel manager, who informed the police of the incident. The one-town SI, L.Jeevan Reddy, visited the hotel and shifted the body to the district headquarters hospital pending postmortem.

The farmer reportedly owed Rs. 1 lakh to the Adilabad District Cooperative Central Bank. As he was asked to repay the loan, he decided to end his life, it was suspected. A case was registered.

Certificate of excellence for computer company

Hyderabad: The Computer Generated Solution, India Private Limited, has been awarded a certificate of excellence by the State Government for the services rendered to the Tourism Department in building a client base using its vast network of mailing data bank.

This in turn helped the department bag awards from the Centre for the unique networking that helped promote tourism in the State. The MD of the company, Ram Mohan Vedantham, was honoured at a function recently in this regard.

Kalingapatnam coldest place in State

Hyderabad: Kalingapatnam became the coldest place in the State on Thursday recording the lowest night temperature of 15 degrees C.

During the 24-hour period ended this morning, weather was mainly dry in coastal Andhra and dry in Telangana and Rayalaseema. Minimum temperatures fell at one or two places in coastal Andhra but they significantly rose at one or two places in Telangana and changed a little in Rayalaseema.

They were above normal in Rayalaseema and also at many palces in coastal Andhra.

There will be isolated rain in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Friday, according to a forecast issued by the State Met office.

Brahmotsavams of Vijayadurga temple begin

Cuddapah: The second Brahmotsavams commenced at Sri Vijayadurga temple here on Thursday with the Peethadhipathi of Sarada Peetham at Pendurthy, Swami Swarupanandendra, performing `Dhwajarohanam'. The temple on built-up road was colourfully illuminated and decorated for the Brahmotsavams, under the supervision of the temple founder, S. Mallikarjuna Rao. Priests performed `homam, agni pratishta and kalasa sthapana' chanting `mantras' in Saiva and Aagama sastra mode. The presiding deity, decorated on `Simhavahanam', will be taken round the temple tonight.

Tax exemption for water not supplied

MADANAPALLE: Shamim Aslam, councillor in the Madanapalle municipality, said at the council meeting on Wednesday that water was not being supplied through pipes for three months and wanted to know why water charges should be collected from the residents for the said period even as they were exempted from paying the same. The resolution to exempt resident from paying water tax for non-supply was passed at the previous council meet. The Commissioner, N. Ravindra Babu, said that the representation was given to the Government and as per its directions it may be adjusted. The chairperson, Naresh Kumar, said that a proposal for another three months exemption for water tax would made at the next council meeting.

PW bandh partial

Cuddapah: The bandh called by the People's War in protest against the recent encounters at Tsundupalle and Piler evoked a partial response in Rayachoti, Tsundupalle, Sambepalle and Chinnamandem mandals on Thursday. Banks, hotels, shops, cinema theatres, RESCO office, Government and private schools were closed in Rayachoti town and RTC buses did not ply on rural routes. Banks and schools were closed for the day in the three mandals. However, no untoward incidents were reported.

Transco control room set up

KURNOOL: The AP Transco has set up round-the-clock control room here on Thursday to minimise the damage on account of power failures for agriculture sector. Talking to reporters, the Superintending Engineer, P. Ramulu, said all measures had been taken for seven-hour power supply to the agriculture sector till the rabi season was completed. He said spare transformers of all capacities were stocked at 14 subdivisional offices for replacement in case of breakdown. Farmers could contact the office of the ADE or central control room here on telephone numbers 08518-257012 or 257420.

Man commits suicide

NELLORE: Gummadi Venkateswarlu (45), a native of Gummalladibba of Kovur police circle, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. According to police, his house had become a centre for conducting single number lottery. Recently, he along with his wife, were nabbed and later released on bail. It was alleged that the activity had been going on in his house.

Zilla Parishad meeting

KARIMNAGAR: The Zilla Parishad general body meeting will be held on February 17 at 11 a.m. at the ZP conference hall to discuss various issues, according to an official release here on Thursday.

Student dies of snakebite

KARIMNAGAR: A ninth class student studying in the AP Residential Social Welfare Hostel for SC boys at Koheda mandal headquarters, died due to snakebite on Thursday. According to the police sources, the student, R. Jagan, was playing in the nearby fields when he was bitten. He started vomiting blood and succumbed while being shifted to the hospital. Meanwhile, the Mahajaja Sangarsh Samithi district president, B. Komuraiah, alleged that the boy died due to negligence of the hostel principal, who does not reside at the place of posting, for his failure to provide proper medicare. Demanding suspension of the principal, he urged the Government to pay an ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to the bereaved family members.

Headmasters' meeting

KARIMNAGAR: The Reginal Joint Director, School Education, Vidyasagar, has called upon the Government school headmasters to strive for achieving cent per cent pass percentage in the SSC examinations, scheduled to be held in March. Addressing a meeting of headmasters here on Thursday, Mr. Vidyasagar said during the last three years SSC results had improved by around 20 per cent in the Karimnagar district due to the constant efforts made by the teachers. He urged the headmasters to aim for cent per cent pass percentage. The DEO, B. Manmadha Reddy, called upon the headmasters to submit proposals for distribution bicycles to girl students under the `Soukaryam' scheme. The DPEP assistant project coordinator, Akramullah Khan, the SSC examinations assistant examiner, Anand Rao, and were present.

Maths Olympiad winners

KARIMNAGAR: The Masters Maths Olympiad-2004 prizes were distributed at a function held the Masters Junior College here on Thursday. The Kakatiya University Registrar, N. Satyanarayana, the KC Mathematics Department faculty member, T. Ram Reddy, the RIO, A. Laxmaiah, the Masters College chairman, Ch. Mallikarjun Dev, the college principal, B. Sudarshan were among the guests. Kishore Kumar (St. Alphones School) secured the first prize, while A. Mahesh and D. HariKrishna from Don Bosco School secured the second and third prizes respectively. Around 3,000 students from 750 schools participated in the test held on January 31 this year.
