By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, FEB. 5. Primary and secondary education should be redesigned to ensure provision of skill training programmes to develop self-confidence of children, said K.G. Meenakshi, Principal, Sivananda Balalaya.

Receiving the `Individuals who have enhanced the image of the city' award from the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, here on Monday, she said despite general resistance from parents to the new concept of education, there was a good response from a section of them, which, has realised that the education system should make an individual a holistic person.

She urged the Rotary Club of Tiruchi to organise a convention of parents to drive home the advantages inherent in the new system. Taking pride in receiving the award, she said achievement was possible by attuning development in the direction of aptitude.

Three others to be honoured with the award were P. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Director, District Employment Office, Prabhakar Immanuel, Director, Holy Cross Service Society and R. Kalaikovan, Director, Dr. M. Rajamanickar Centre for Historical Research.

Mr. Suresh Kumar said the energy of the youth could be tapped in a better way by making them realise their potential. He felt that the society would remain stagnant if one got bogged down by family situations.

While Mr. Kalaikovan said anybody with confidence was capable of achievement, Mr. Prabhakar Immanuel elaborated on his invention of an affordable hearing aid costing Rs. 400.

Earlier, S. Kannan, Chairman, ROAR programme, spoke.

The awardees were honoured with medals by the District Governor of the Rotary International - District 3000, G. Gopal.

The president of the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, R. Panchanadhan, said the club would organise an interface between the Corporation Commissioner, Anand Patil, and the public, on February 9.
