Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, FEB. 5 . The Tiruchi District Consumers' Council has demanded removal of obstructions, put up in the middle of highways by the police from unmanned points. Adopting a resolution this effect at a recent meeting, its general secretary, J. Selvaraj, said such obstructions hindered free flow of traffic and caused accidents. Resolutions were passed seeking the intervention of authorities concerned to prevent urination in the open outside the urinal in front of the Thanjavur bus terminus at the Central Bus Stand and necessary action on the part of the Regional Transport Officer to check the modification of ordinary autorikshaws into share autos. Mr. Selvaraj alleged that some gas companies indulged in the practice of pumping LPG from two full cylinders into an empty cylinder, using a device, before selling it as a full cylinder. The illegal practice of filling LPG from cylinders meant for domestic use into those for industrial purpose was in vogue, he said. He complained that drinking water meant for Ponmalai was being diverted by anti-social elements for irrigating fields and drew the attention of the authorities to denial free saris and dhotis to needy persons. Overbridges in the city, particularly the one at Palakarai, were being constructed on a slow pace and urged the authorities concerned to expedite the process. Referring to the narrowing of the road along the `Kadai Theru' in Tiruverambur due to encroachments, he said they should be removed to avoid accidents and loss of life. The meeting sought appointment of more doctors at the Government Hospital at Lalgudi and demanded that due attention be given to cleanliness and sanitation. The other issues discussed at the meeting included shortcomings in the cremation ground at ward 67 in Woraiyur, the need to reduce the fare of Rs.1500 charged at the Konakarai ground for cremating a body. The meeting objected to the practice of the Electricity Board in calculating the bill on the basis of earlier bills instead of doing so based on the actual consumption.
