MYSORE, FEB. 5. The "black warrant'' to carryout the death sentence awarded by the Supreme Court to four associates of the forest brigand, Veerappan, who were convicted in the Palar blast case, was handed over to the Mysore jail authorities here today. On January 29, the apex court converted the life sentence awarded to Simon, Gnanaprakash, Bilivendra, and Mesekara Madaiah by the Special TADA Court in Mysore in 2001 into capital punishment for killing 22 personnel of the Police and Forest departments in a landmine blast at Palar on April 9, 1993. The advocate Lokesh, assistant to the Special Public Prosecutor conducting the TADA cases, M. Nagaraj, said that the file pertaining to the Palar blast case and the warrant reached here on February 3 and the "black warrant" was issued by the Principal District and Sessions Judge, G.V. Hegde, to the jail superintendent today. The date for the execution of the warrant had been fixed as April 16 and the four convicts would be hanged till death at 6 a.m. at the Belgaum jail as the Mysore jail was not equipped for it, Mr. Lokesh said. However, he said that the convicts would be allowed to file a mercy petition seeking remission of their sentence.
