MYSORE, FEB. 5. Many farmers from Lakshmipura and surrounding villages in the district staged a "bullock cart protest'' on Bangalore-Mysore State Highway seeking compensation from the Government for the crop loss. They protested the Government's "apathy" in payment of compensation for the crop loss due to drought and non-release of water for irrigation. The sugarcane crop in the region had withered and farmers incurred losses. They were unable to repay loans taken from banks, they said. They said when water was released to Tamil Nadu and farmers in Mandya district incurred loss, the Government released Rs. 58 crore to help them tide over the crisis. But the Government had ignored farmers in Mysore district who also faced similar problems, they alleged. The farmers said though the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, had been apprised of the problems faced by them, there had been no response from him. Traffic on the highway was disrupted for sometime. Police cleared the road blockade and took some farmers into custody and released them later.
