Viswa Brahmins seek coop. credit society

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 5. The Viswa Brahmin Sangham, representing goldsmiths, blacksmiths, carpenters, sculptors and brass workers, wants the Government to form a cooperative credit society for the upliftment of these sections.

With modern technology adversely affecting the livelihood of the swarnakars, help from Government was a much-needed step, the office-bearers of the District Viswa Brahmin Sangham and its State committee treasurer, Dhanalakota Anandam, told a press conference here on Wednesday.

The district unit president, Ramoju Venkata Ramana, the general-secretary, S.V. Ratnakara Rao, the vice-president of the city unit, Godi Narasimha Chary, the secretary for coastal districts, Kota Ramesh, took part in the press conference.

To help the community, seats must be reserved for Viswa Brahmins in polytechnics, ITIs and vocational courses. They also lacked representation in the Gems and Jewellery Park in Hyderabad, though goldsmith profession was their traditional art and profession, the Sangham lamented.

In the case of Special Economic Zones, candidates other than Viswa Brahmins were being trained in the trades which traditionally belonged to Viswa Brahmins, and hence they alone should be given preference in such trades.

The sangham felt that lack of political representation was the reason for Viswa Brahmins not able to achieve their demands. "There is no MLA or MP from our community. Viswa Brahmins comprise 35 per cent of the population in Visakhapantam-I Assembly constituency, the second largest segment after fishermen. We are nine per cent in the State's population.''

With the considerable strength of voters, the Viswa Brahmins demanded that the political parties allot the Visakhapatnam-I ticket to a swarnakara.

The sangham would field a candidate from the community as an independent if no political party allotted the ticket to the community. "We are trying garner support from other Backward Classes.''
