MADURAI, FEB.5. The district administration will launch a `maha health mela' in the district from tomorrow and free camps will be held for two weeks covering all 314 health sub-centres. Elaborate arrangements have been made to conduct the mela, which will be inaugurated by the Collector, B. Chandra Mohan, at Podumbu near Koilpappakudi. Rs.8 lakhs will be utilised for the mela from the MPs Constituency Development Fund. The Health department, along with other government agencies involved in nutrition, education, tuberculosis and leprosy eradication, will take part in the mela. The camps, aimed at rural population, will have all medical examinations. Besides, surgeries for cataract patients will be performed at the Government Rajaji Hospital here. The Deputy Director of Health Services, A. Rajendran, said mother and child health activities would also be undertaken at the camps. And children immunised. Leprosy detection, malaria examination and sputum tests for tuberculosis would be done, besides family planning procedures. The camps would be held at Primary Health Centre sub-centres from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by a team of doctors continuously.
