Temperature

MADURAI, FEB.5. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 21.4 degree Celsius.

Boy dies

A school-going boy was killed in a freak mishap at Kamarajapuram here on Wednesday.

According to the police, A. Rafiq Raja (7), of Chinthamani Road, was returning home when a piece of iron rod fell on him from a mechanised drilling unit engaged in sinking a bore-well in the area.

Raja, who sustained a grievous head injury, was rushed to a private hospital where he died. The Keerathurai police have registered a case.

Telephone line disruption

There will be disruption of telephone services in the Melur telephone exchange in the midnight of February 6, as the BSNL will carry out upgrading of optical fibre cable system.

Meat seized

Madurai Corporation officials seized 670 kg meat (worth Rs. 30,000) sold in several shops on January 30 and February 5, on the occasion of Martyrs' Day and Vallalar's birth anniversary. The seized meat was safely disposed of.

The Chief Health Officer, Tamaraiselvi, led a team of officials for inspection on both days and found many meat shops remaining open and selling mutton, beef and chicken.

The Commissioner, A. Karthik, said the license for meat shops would be cancelled, if they violated the ban order for more than three times.

No water supply

The Corporation water supply to the north zone will be suspended on February 7, as officials will take up repair works on the main feeder pipeline for pumping water into the overhead tank at K. Pudur.

The regular water supply on alternate days will resume from February 8, a Corporation statement said.

Solid waste management

The Centre for Environmental Services launched the solid waste management scheme at Gomathipuram Thendral Nagar on Monday.

The Gomathipuram-Thendral Nagar Residents' Association and the CENS have contributed two tri-cycles each for door-to-door garbage collection.

The residents have been educated on separation of garbage into organic and inorganic wastes.
