Drinking water scheme launched

ATTINGAL, FEB. 5. A Rs. 12.83-crore scheme of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to augment the supply of drinking water to Attingal municipality and adjoining panchayats was inaugurated by the Speaker, Vakkom Purushottaman, at Attingal this evening.

The scheme, being implemented with 40 per cent financial assistance from the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), is scheduled to become operational in two years. With the implementation of this scheme, Attingal and adjoining areas will get three times the amount of water they get daily now.

The Vamanapuram river will be the source for the augmentation scheme also. A well of 8-metre diameter will be constructed in the Vamanapuram river at Mulli. The intake of raw water will be effected by two pumps of 175 HP capacity each. The raw water will be pumped to a filtration plant, capable of filtering 12.5 million litres a day, which will be set up at nearby Valiakunnu.

After filtration, the water will be stored at an overhead tank capable of holding 18 lakh litres of water. From here, water will be distributed to various places through a 57-km-long network of distribution pipes.

The augmentation scheme is also designed to cater to the requirements of Azhoor, Keezhattingal, Keezhuvalam and Avanavanchery panchayats. For this, an overhead tank capable of storing six lakh litres of water will be constructed at Azhoor.

A separate set of lines will reach water from Valiakunnu to Azhoor. From there, water will be distributed through a 30,000 metre-long network of distribiution lines. Additional water will also be pumped to the existing storage tank at Sasthavattom, in Azhoor panchayat.

The Water Resources Minister, T. M. Jacob, presided over the meeting.
