Rural women urged to take to entrepreneurship

Coimbatore, Feb, 5. With 70 to 75 per cent of the women entrepreneurs hailing from urban background, there was pertinent need to make more rural women take to entrepreneurship in a big way, observed Sudha C. Prakash, vice-president of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Karnataka (AWAKE).

She was speaking at the inauguration of the one-day national-level workshop, `Entrepreneurs - Awake, Arise, Stop Not...", organised by the Commerce Department of the PSGR Krishnammal College of Women.

Though identifying the potential field and market took time, getting into the groove thereafter would not take time, as there were adequate support systems and guidance facilities, she said.

Smaller investments would be adequate to make women job creators rather than seekers, she added. Women entrepreneurs preferred to venture into handicrafts and food sectors more. The other sectors in which women ventured today included automobiles, electronics, IT, biotechnology and service industry. Pointing out that the liking for biotechnology was increasing, Ms. Sudha pointed out that the future for women entrepreneurship would be in the service industry since it required less investment and more hard work. The demand for herbal and health products was on the rise, and women entrepreneurs should try to tap this market, she said.

The Secretary of GRD Institutions, Nandini Rangasamy, said that the objective to make students shun beaten tracks was to create entrepreneurial mindset in them, she said.
