TIRUVARUR, FEB.6. About 160 acres of land will be allotted to women self help groups at the rate of eight acres per group in the coastal area of Kondiyakadu in Thiruthuraipoondi taluk in Tiruvarur district to create ponds and rear fish, according to V. Ramanathan, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Tiruvarur district. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held recently at Tiruvarur to discuss providing facilities to poor people for rearing fish in coastal areas. Kamal Mange, Adviser (marketing products of SHGs), V. Ramanathan, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Tiruvarur district, S. K. Samapath Kumar, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Thanjavur district, Rajasuryan of fisheries department from Nagapattinam, P. Yoganathan, Thillaivilagam panchayat president, Shanthi Gunasekaran, Kondiyakadu panchayat president, participated. The meeting discussed cultivation of medicinal plants and mangroves wherever water was saline. Fish rearing may catch up at Kondiyakadu as most of the people are fishermen, Ramanathan said at the meeting. It has been decided to form an action committee of village panchayat presidents, members of women SHGs for implementing the fish pond scheme under the leadership of G. Soundarajan of Bharathamatha voluntary organisation. District administration is keen to implement the scheme, he added.
