THANJAVUR, FEB.6. A sum of Rs. five lakhs from the State Government and another Rs. five lakhs from the Central Government will be given as development fund to the village panchahyat, which achieves total sanitation in this district, said the Collector, S. Kosalaraman, here today. Inaugurating a workshop on `maintaining water resources and ensuring sanitation in village panchayats' for the village panchayat presidents in Thanjavur Panchayat union here today, he said open defecation should be stopped in villages. People should give up dry latrines and go in for individual flush-out toilets. A sum of Rs. 600 would be given as incentive for constructing individual toilets in villages. Panchayat presidents, teachers and self-help groups should set an example to others by constructing individual toilets for their use in villages. Solid waste management should be taught to people in village panchayats. An awareness campaign should be launched in this regard. Children should be advised to use toilets in villages, he said. There are 268 overhead tanks in panchayats in the Thanjavur panchayat union. There are 314 mini overhead tanks and 563 hand pumps. These resources should be maintained properly by village panchayats to ensure total sanitation. Village panchayat presidents from 61 panchayats in the Thanjavur panchayat union attended the workshop. P. Rajendran, Project Officer, DRDA, Nanji.Varadarajan, Chairman, Thanjavur panchayat union, Banumathi, Assistant Director (panchayats), participated in the function.
