`Converse in Kannada with non-Kannadigas'

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHAMARASA VEDIKE (BELARY), FEB. 7. Kamala Hampana, writer, today urged Kannadigas to converse in Kannada with people from other States who had settled down in Karnataka.

It would help them develop a love towards Kannada, she said after inaugurating the 12th Bellary District Sahitya Sammelan here.

Referring to the increasing number of English-medium schools in the State, Dr. Hampana underlined the need to make it mandatory for them to teach Kannada properly. She had written to the Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K. Chandrashekar, in this regard, she said.

Dr. Hampana took exception to what she called the unnecessary use of English in Kannada television serials and pronunciation of Kannada by the artistes. "Kannada is being massacred. It should be stopped immediately,'' she said.

Referring to the charge that some cinema exhibitors in Bellary had rejected the request of the sammelan organisers to screen Kannada films for two days in view of the sammelan, she said that it was an insult to the organisers.

She termed it the result of courteousness of Kannadigas. "We are very courteous and this has become a curse. We have to fight against the injustice to Kannada," she said.

Harikrishna Punaroor, President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, who released a collection of poems, said the State government should avoid duplication of works as regards propagation of Kannada. He said the parishat had been taking care of the functions of the Kannada Sahitya Academy, the Kannada Book Authority, and the Kannada Development Authority.

The works of these organisations should be entrusted to the parishat. This would not only avoid duplication of work but also help the Government save its expenditure on these organisations.

Mr. Punaroor took exception to the "dual-policy" adopted by the Government with regard to education and wanted it to be rectified. The Government had different policies for aided, government, and unaided schools, he said.

K.B. Hanumantharaya, writer, presided over the inaugural function.

G. Janardhana Reddy, President of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, announced a donation of Rs. one lakh for organising foundation lectures by the parishat.

K.C. Kondaiah, MLC, released a souvenir brought out on the occasion. Mr. Kondaiah too donated Rs. one lakh for organising foundation lectures in the name of his father. Similarly, T.H.M. Basavaraj, H.M Vimala Shivanandaiah, the Chellagurki Yerriswamy Trust, Y. Rajashekarappa, Y. Basavarajappa, Y. Chengalappa, and H. Chandrashekar Gowda donated funds for organising foundation lectures.

Shreedhar Rayasam welcomed the gathering. Byali Vijayakumar Gowda proposed a vote of thanks.

Prof. Hanumantharaya and Dr. Hampana were brought to the venue in a colourful procession.
