By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, FEB. 7. A group of sports lovers from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, on Friday, urged the State Government to give cash incentives to the hockey players from the State who had brought laurels to the country, especially at the recent Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad.

Arjun Halappa, Sandeep Michael, and Len Aiyappa from the State helped India win the gold medal in hockey at the Afro-Asian Games. But their hard work and discipline went unnoticed by the State Government, A.C. Belliappa, member of the group, told The Hindu on Friday.

He said the Uttar Pradesh Government had honoured Harpal Singh and the Tamil Nadu Government Dinesh Nayak, both of whom were in the Indian hockey team.

They were given cheques for Rs. 10,000 each. The Andhra Pradesh Government had given the tennis player, Sania Mirza, Rs. 15 lakh.

The Tamil Nadu Government had felicitated Anju Bobby Geroge, who won the bronze in the World Athletics Championship-2003 in Paris.

Mr. Halappa is from Somwarpet and Mr. Aiyappa from Kushalnagar in Somwarpet taluk. He said the group would be meet the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, in Bangalore soon to pressure him to sanction the incentive.
