Three Cauvery irrigation projects ready for commissioning

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, FEB. 7. The Arkavathi, Yagachi, and Bagur Naville medium irrigation projects, which were pending for a long time, have been completed and are ready for commissioning.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Managing Director of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, Thimme Gowda, said the Rs. 100-crore Arkavathi project in Kanakapura taluk would irrigate about 6,000 hectares of land. "It will be dedicated next week," Mr. Thimme Gowda said. The project includes a reservoir for canal irrigation and two lift irrigation schemes. Work on the project began in 1984, but it was shelved due to various reasons. Work on the project resumed only after the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam came into being, Mr. Thimme Gowda said.

Similarly, work on the Yagachi Dam in Belur too had been completed. Work on the Rs. 302-crore project to irrigate 37,000 acres of land began in 1984-85. Soon after the nigam was established, the pending works on the project were taken up on a war footing and the 40 km-long canal was completed. The dam will be commissioned in a day or two, Mr. Thimme Gowda said.

Another long-pending medium irrigation scheme, which had been completed, was the Bagur Naville Exit Lift Irrigation scheme. Two lift irrigation projects were taken up at the entry and the exit of the 9 km-long tunnel. "This project too was pending for a long time. But, the works have been completed and the scheme will be commissioned tomorrow," he said.

Mr. Thimme Gowda also announced that the Government had given administrative approval for the Rs. 702-crore Kabini Stage II project. The approval came at the meeting of the nigam held on January 19.
