ARIYALUR, FEB. 7 . The work on the construction of a new district sports complex with various facilities on a sprawling 15-acre site here by the Perambalur district unit of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu on an outlay of Rs.68 lakhs with a matching grant from the Centre is progressing at a fast pace and expected to be completed by next month. The land for the complex has been provided by the Government Arts College, Ariyalur, on lease. While the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has come forward to provide 50 per cent of the project outlay as matching grant, the State's contribution is 25 per cent and the rest is public contribution. The sports complex will house a gymnasium, an open-air stadium, athletic track and a couple of volleyball, basketball, kabaddi and kho kho courts. Thanks to the initiative taken by the Collector, S. Natarajan, Rs.26 lakhs was raised through public donations from industrial houses in Ariyalur and the surrounding areas and philanthropists. The amount has been deposited with the executive engineer, technical education wing of the PWD, which is in charge of the project execution work. The State Government has already released its first instalment of Rs.5.6 lakhs. The Centre's contribution of Rs. 26.90 lakhs is expected shortly. According to official sources, the construction of gymnasium has already been completed and over 70 per cent of the work on the outdoor stadium is over. The work on laying of the 400-m track and establishing other games courts is progressing at a fast pace. Mr. Natarajan is evincing keen interest in the completion of the project and has been monitoring the progress of the work at regular intervals. Ariyalur has an important place in the sports map of the country and the sports loving people of the town are demanding better sports facilities for long. The full-fledged sports complex, when ready by next month end, will prove a boon to the sports lovers of the entire Perambalur district, observed a retired college teacher.
