Assam
By Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI, FEB. 7. The Dhubri district administration in lower Assam collected samples of dead poultry birds yesterday following rumours of a breakout of bird flu. The Deputy Commissioner, Prasanta Kumar Barua, told The Hindu that about 1,000 poultry birds had died since January in the district. A survey conducted in 29 villages, including 20 along the Indo-Bangladesh border, revealed that the death was caused by three diseases coccidiosis, chronic respiratory disease and bacilliary white diarrhoea. In nine villages which had a total poultry population of 20,000, about 1,000 poultry birds reportedly died. "However, none of the villages reported deaths in one day or in a large batch to suggest an outbreak of any contagious disease," he added. In Dhubri town, the six poultry farms with a total population of about 800 birds reported 11 deaths during this period, he said.
