By Our Staff Reporter
KANNUR, FEB. 7. The Vande Matharam scheme for providing free pre and post-natal care with the objective of reducing the rate of maternal mortality in the country will be launched in the district on February 9. The scheme, jointly launched by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society of India (FOGSI), is aimed at reducing the maternal mortality rate to 200 per one lakh deliveries by 2007. Though the State had already achieved the target, the scheme is being launched to address the issue of providing better care for women during pregnancy. Under the scheme, gynaecologists from Government and private hospitals in a region would form a collective to mobilise resources for providing the service. Briefing the details of the scheme, the District Collector, K.S. Srinivas, said that under the scheme, treatment and medicines would be provided free. Nearly 60 members of the Kannur chapter of the FOGSI would enrol themselves for working under the scheme. Their services would be utilised on the ninth of every month. The District Medical Officer, A. Rameshwari, who was also present, said that according to a survey conducted by the Registrar General of India, pre and post-natal haemorrhage, anaemia, obstructed labour, hypertension, delivery-related infection, unscientific abortion and continuous pregnancy were the major causes of maternal mortality in the country.
